  • Amazon has signed a new PPA with AES for two California solar storage facilities.
  • The projects in San Bernardino County aim to permanently power Amazon’s facilities.
  • Baldy Mesa projects include 150 MW solar, 75 MW BESS; Silver Peak has 50 MW of solar and 25 MW of BESS.
  • A portion of Amazon’s 1.5GW renewable energy portfolio for CA and AZ.

Amazon took another step towards its sustainability commitment with AES acquiring renewable energy from two of its new Solar Plus storage facilities in San Bernardino County, California Through this power purchase agreement (PPA) . with this, Amazon will use energy from these sources to power its local operations.

The new projects Baldy Mesa and Silver Peak add significant renewable energy to Amazon’s infrastructure. Silver Peak, a small project, combines a 150 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system with a 75 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage (BESS) system at the Baldy Mesa project in Adelanto, California , bringing in 50MW of new solar PV and 25MW/100MWh BESS, which supports Amazon’s sustainable energy campaign at its data centers and other locations in California.

These projects support Amazon’s broader renewable energy goal of providing a total of 1.5GW of solar electricity and battery power across its data centers in California and Arizona Will be dedicated to offices

This collaboration is the third major renewable energy agreement between Amazon and AES. Before that, in May 2022, Amazon secured two PPAs with AES to power its operations in California. Under this agreement, AES will provide renewable energy in the CAISO (California Independent System Operator) market for Amazon, using a portfolio of 450MW solar and 225MW BESS capable of four-hour storage.

Amazon is moving closer to its long-term sustainability goals with its expanding renewable energy network. These recent initiatives with AES not only enhance Amazon’s renewable infrastructure but also set the standard for integrating clean energy into corporate operations. Future development of similar projects could further support Amazon’s path to 100% renewable energy reliance.
