- Moment Energy wins $20.3 million from the DOE for a Gigafactory in Taylor, Texas.
- The plant will produce 1 GWh per year and provide jobs for over 200 employees.
- UL1974 certification ensures that all repurposing of batteries is undertaken under strict safety standards.
- The project advocates for the Justice40 Initiative to develop former coal communities.
Moment Energy, an innovative electric vehicle (EV) battery repurposing company, today announced it will develop the first UL1974-certified facility in the U.S. dedicated to repurposing EV batteries. The award for the project, amounting to $20.3 million, has been secured by the company from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of its wider initiative to increase clean energy manufacturing in the country.

This is part of the $428 million initiative by the Biden-Harris Administration aimed at reviving former coal communities and countering critical energy supply chain vulnerabilities. Moment Energy’s new Gigafactory will be built in Taylor, Texas, and will be focused on producing safe, reliable, and affordable battery energy storage systems from repurposed EV batteries.
Construction will begin during the first quarter of 2025, and when operational at full capacity, the facility is anticipated to reach annual production capability of 1 GWh. Additionally, the project will provide more than 200 permanent positions, increasing job availability in the area.
The Gigafactory will be UL1974 certified in the safety standards of repurposing, and this project is one of the crucial steps taken toward the strengthening of America’s clean energy supply chain without using foreign materials. Moment Energy, through the efficient repurposing of EV batteries, fosters a circular economy approach extending the lifespan of critical battery materials.
We are humbled to be selected for this transformational initiative. Our mission to enable universal access to clean, affordable, and reliable power exactly aligns with the goals of the DOE. This facility will be a major contributor to our commitment to repurpose all retired EV batteries by 2030, said Edward Chiang, CEO of Moment Energy.

Being the first and only UL1974-certified EV battery repurposing company from North America, Moment Energy is pushing their vision further by continuing to develop in-house AI management systems that will eventually significantly increase the safety as well as the longevity of solutions based on battery energy storage.
The Gigafactory Texas marks a major step forward for Moment Energy and the much larger clean energy industry. Because the project focuses on battery reuse from EVs, it meets national energy targets, spurs local economic growth, and contributes to the revitalization of distressed communities.
