A new report by GlobalData stresses that the fast rate of advancement in energy storage, from sodium-ion batteries to ultra-fast charging technologies, is revolutionizing major industries, including automotive, aerospace, and residential energy management. This projects onto several dimensions on the safety-cost-energy efficiency axis.

Comments from Saurabh Daga, Project Manager at GlobalData say that “advanced solutions like solid-state batteries and sodium-ion alternatives are not only complementing traditional lithium-ion systems but are also heavily improving in terms of safety, lifecycle, and cost-effectiveness.” All these developments will be critical for the transition to renewable energy globally.

Volkswagen has collaborated with QuantumScape, and the collaboration has created solid-state battery prototypes that can push electric vehicle range up to 500,000 kilometers. This is a step in achieving higher durability as well as charging efficiency and leads to faster adoption of electric vehicles around the world.

Of particular note in aerospace is the work of GM Defense, GM Company’s entity, in proposing an energy storage system built on the Ultium EV platform for military applications. This is a flexible system that may have different configurations of multiple motors at reduced risk of supply chain disruption and less dependence on fossil fuels.
